Saint Gatien Cathedral in Tours, a Gothic masterpiece

The capital city of the Loire valley wine region, a must stopover during your wine and château tour.

Capital of Touraine, the city of Tours is a key stop on the Loire Valley castle route.

Our suggestions to help you plan your stay and organize a wine tasting in some of the best wineries nearby.

Tours, strategically located at the heart of the Loire Valley, is an essential stop for wine enthusiasts and heritage seekers. The city itself offers numerous attractions that are well worth a visit.

The historic center of Tours, with its famous Place Plumereau, captivates with its typical half-timbered houses and lively atmosphere. The Saint-Gatien Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, majestically dominates the city. For art lovers, the Fine Arts Museum, housed in the former palace of the archbishops, houses a rich collection spanning from antiquity to contemporary art. The Olivier Debré Contemporary Creation Center complements the cultural offering with its exhibitions of contemporary art.

Tours has been designated as the International City of Gastronomy, a recognition that testifies to the richness of its culinary tradition. The city abounds in restaurants and bistros offering fresh, local cuisine, showcasing the region’s products. The wine lists of these establishments reflect the diversity and quality of the surrounding vineyards.

Tours’ location is particularly advantageous for wine lovers. The famous Vouvray vineyard is only ten minutes from the city center, offering easy access to its renowned white wines made from the Chenin grape variety. Other prestigious appellations such as Chinon, Bourgueil, and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil are also nearby (about forty kilometers downstream of the river).

The city celebrates its wine heritage through various events, the most emblematic of which is Vitiloire. This festival, held every year in early June, brings together around 150 winemakers for a weekend of outdoor tastings. It is an opportunity for visitors to discover the diversity of Loire wines in a festive and friendly atmosphere.

Tours thus establishes itself as a prime destination for wine tourists, harmoniously combining historical heritage, cultural offerings, local gastronomy, and wine discovery. Whether for an in-depth visit or a stopover on the route of castles and Loire wines, the city promises a rich and varied experience for its visitors.

A wine tasting near the city center of Tours? Absolutely! Rochecorbon and the Vouvray vineyard are only a few kilometers to the east. Among the winemakers closest to Tours, in Rochecorbon itself, we recommend Château Gaudrelle, which offers a warm welcome and a quality tasting of sparkling, dry, or sweet white wines in its troglodyte cellar. Further south and more confidential, the Touraine Noble Joué appellation can be tasted at winemakers like Rémi Cosson or Rousseau Frères Vignerons. But enjoying wine in Tours also means its many quality restaurants, and especially two other great Loire Valley vineyards about 45 minutes by car: Chinon and Bourgueil.
