The 2023 vintage in Chinon is excellent, despite what local growers described as a “sporty” growing season. A warm, humid spring followed by significant rainfall in June led to intense mildew pressure, pushing vignerons to show both technical skill and resilience. Thanks to rigorous vineyard management and strong community support, the outcome is remarkable. The Cabernet Franc-based reds display a bright hue, vibrant freshness, and crunchy red fruit—a signature of Chinon’s pleasure-driven wines. Although yields were slightly below average, quality was not compromised. On the contrary, the wines show purity, supple tannins, and a delightful approachability sure to please lovers of Loire reds. Compared to other red-producing appellations in the region, Chinon 2023 stands out as a fine example of elegance, tenacity, and collective effort in the face of climatic adversity.
