The 2023 vintage in Bourgueil is superb, both in quality and balance. Despite notable mildew pressure in the spring, growers maintained the health of the vines through vigilant care. The summer, marked by alternating heat and humidity, encouraged a gradual ripening of Cabernet Franc, the flagship grape of the appellation. The grapes, harvested at optimal maturity, yielded red wines with supple tannins and vibrant aromas of crunchy red fruits, especially cherry and raspberry. Thoughtful winemaking emphasized the wine’s roundness on the palate, balanced by refreshing acidity and impressive aromatic concentration. Unlike some Loire appellations more heavily affected by climatic challenges, Bourgueil stood out with a harmonious and appealing profile. With a rating of 4.3 out of 5, the 2023 vintage is already regarded as one of the appellation’s recent standout successes.
