The answer

It’s the legendary Coulée de Serrant, a jewel of just 7 hectares, cultivated by the Joly family for generations. Founded in 1130 by Cistercian monks, this monastic vineyard is one of the few estates to stand as an AOC on its own

Planted on schist slopes, the monks shaped a terroir dedicated exclusively to Chenin Blanc. Today, the Joly family continues a demanding biodynamic approach, producing wines with remarkable depth and longevity. Notes of acacia blossom, candied quince, and vibrant minerality make Coulée de Serrant a near-mystical tasting experience.

In 1981, Nicolas Joly took over the estate and became a global pioneer of biodynamics, claiming that “nature must permeate every drop.” Today, Coulée de Serrant is regarded as a living monument, celebrated on the world’s finest tables for its purity and uniqueness.

Other prestigious “small-format” Loire appellations

  • Quarts-de-Chaume (38 ha), a Grand Cru of the Layon, its name recalling the medieval tax of “one quarter” of the best harvests. Its luscious sweet wines, made from botrytized Chenin grapes picked in multiple passes, are unmatched in concentration.

  • Chaume (26 ha), a neighbor of Quarts-de-Chaume, also produces outstanding sweet wines, prized for their balance of richness and freshness.
