Hold tight: the Loire vineyard could fit 140,000 football fields (well, we haven’t actually counted)! From Nantes to Sancerre, this wine mosaic winds along 800 kilometers – that’s the distance from Paris to Marseille. And some still think Loire only makes light wines… well, they certainly have quite some length!
This impressive 40,000-hectare area wasn’t born yesterday: back in the 5th century, Saint Martin of Tours was already planting his first vines in Vouvray. During the Middle Ages, Loire wines even traveled to the tables of English kings – no wonder the British still have a soft spot for our bubbles!
With over 70 different appellations, the Loire vineyard is a true atlas of terroirs. In 2023, nearly 3,000 winemakers cultivate their art here, producing about 2 million hectoliters annually. That’s enough to keep toasting with friends for quite a while!
