Explore the Bourgueil vineyard and find its main wineries on the map.

The Bourgueil vineyard, located in the Loire Valley in Indre-et-Loire, is a controlled designation of origin (AOC) that has been recognized since 1937. This wine region covers around 1,400 hectares and primarily produces red wines, with a small production of rosés, made mostly from the cabernet franc grape, locally known as “Breton.”

The terroir of Bourgueil is characterized by three types of soils: gravelly islands, a high sandy-gravel terrace, and limestone slopes. This geological diversity, combined with the degraded oceanic temperate climate, contributes to the production of wines with varied profiles, ranging from light and fruity wines to more structured wines suitable for aging.

The wine history of Bourgueil dates back to the Gallo-Roman era, but it was during the Middle Ages that the region truly flourished. Bourgueil wines have been celebrated by literary figures such as Ronsard, Rabelais, and later Balzac, attesting to their renown throughout the centuries.

Wine tourism is well-developed in the region. Many estates offer cellar tours and tastings, allowing visitors to discover the specificities of Bourgueil wines. The Loire Wine Route passes through the vineyard, offering a scenic itinerary to explore the region.

Among the region’s attractions are the Bourgueil Abbey, founded in the 10th century, and the Château de Langeais, which provides an immersion into medieval history. The proximity to the Loire also allows for combining wine discovery with outdoor activities, such as cycling along the “Loire à Vélo” routes.

Bourgueil wines are generally characterized by aromas of red fruits (raspberry, blackcurrant) and sometimes vegetal notes (green pepper) typical of cabernet franc. With age, they develop more complex aromas of undergrowth and spices.
