Funambule: A Perfect Balancing Act by the Marchesseau Brothers!

I picked up this bottle of Funambule 2020 a couple of years ago at Vitiloire, after a warm and memorable tasting with one of the Marchesseau brothers. That moment was marked by both simplicity and passion—and most of all, an honesty in the wine that made me want to bring the experience home. Today, that pleasure is still very much alive.

Funambule-2022 (Domaine Bertrand et Vincent Marchesseau)

Located in the heart of the Touraine region, Domaine Bertrand et Vincent Marchesseau represents a new generation of winemakers—deeply rooted in tradition, yet determined to shake things up. With 22 hectares spread across three appellations—Bourgueil, Chinon, and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil—the brothers combine technical precision with a rebellious streak. Their motto? Dare, but with wisdom. Certified organic, they go all in on sustainability, with eco-friendly packaging and a range of wines where each cuvée has its own distinct personality. Funambule is exactly that—a tightrope walk of fruit, freshness, drinkability, and character. A daring move, perfectly executed.

In the glass, Funambule 2020 is immediately charming, with a clear, lightly shimmering ruby hue. The nose bursts with crisp red fruit—raspberry, red currant—layered with the signature vegetal notes of Cabernet Franc: red bell pepper, crushed leaves, adding depth and a refreshing edge. On the palate, it’s a textbook example of balance: juicy from the first sip, with silky tannins, persistent fruit, and a zesty, mouthwatering finish that keeps you coming back. Everything about this wine is designed to stay light without losing complexity. And the drinkability? Off the charts. It’s the perfect wine to enjoy with friends—but there’s something deeper here too, a soulful quality that makes it truly memorable.

Compared to other, more structured or extracted Bourgueils, Funambule offers a freer, fresher expression. It doesn’t need to flex to prove its worth. While some go big with power or oak, this one bets on fruit, authenticity, and pure drinkability. A gorgeous take on Cabernet Franc—vibrant, joyful, and immediate—without sacrificing the finesse that defines the grape. And for the curious: the label hides a fun little message. Can you spot it? A playful touch that says a lot about the spirit of the estate.

A true standout. At around fifteen dollars, it’s hard to find something more honest or more enjoyable. Perfect with grilled meats, a raclette, or lightly chilled as an aperitif. This Funambule 2020 nails its mission: delivering pure, unpretentious pleasure. Mission accomplished, gentlemen. And thank you for that.
