Discover “Sous la Robe “: A Must-Try Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil!

Just before the holiday season, I had the pleasure of welcoming Sophie and her son Camille from Domaine de la Chopinière du Roy to my home. Their visit was a reminder that wine is, above all, a family affair—here, we’re talking about nine generations of passionate winemakers. They kindly left me a selection of their wines to explore, and I started my tasting journey with their Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil, aptly named “Sous la Robe.”

Sous la Robe (Domaine de la Chopinière du Roy)

Beyond the clever play on words—linking the wine’s robe (its color and texture) to its distinctly feminine touch—this cuvée impresses with its finesse, while delivering all the structure one expects from a great Cabernet Franc. A delightful surprise and a memorable encounter, leaving me eager to discover more.

For those unfamiliar with the estate, Domaine de la Chopinière du Roy is renowned for producing wines of remarkable quality, regularly praised by critics. Whether you’re a fan of reds, dry whites, rosés, or sparkling wines, a visit to the estate promises a tasting experience that will delight your palate. With a well-earned reputation for crafting accessible yet high-quality wines, it’s no wonder local enthusiasts hold this winery in such high regard.

The cuvée “Sous la Robe” is one of the estate’s latest creations, a single-vineyard selection from the ancient bed of the Loire River. Priced at an attractive €12 per bottle at the winery, it showcases the best of Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil. Made exclusively from Cabernet Franc, the grapes are carefully hand-harvested at peak ripeness by the skilled Dames du Roy—a tribute to the winery’s ancestral know-how.

Visually, “Sous la Robe” reveals a deep ruby hue with subtle garnet reflections that shimmer beautifully in the light. On the nose, it opens with an enticing bouquet of ripe black fruits intertwined with delicate violet notes and a hint of spice. As the wine breathes, it gains complexity, revealing earthy undertones of forest floor and licorice, a nod to the unique terroir composed of silt and large stones.

On the palate, the attack is smooth yet vibrant, supported by present tannins and a fresh, lively acidity. The fruit profile remains dominant, gradually evolving into flavors of cassis and licorice, while a subtle menthol touch on the finish adds a sense of lightness and dynamism. The balance is impeccable, reflecting the estate’s commitment to meticulous winemaking and gentle aging.

What sets this Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil apart is its graceful balance between softness and character. It perfectly embodies the typicity of the appellation while offering a uniquely personal expression, marked by elegance and delicacy. This wine is sure to captivate both curious enthusiasts and discerning connoisseurs.

Pairing suggestions? “Sous la Robe” shines alongside a tender beef tournedos, where its velvety texture complements the meat beautifully. It also pairs wonderfully with duck fillets or a well-aged Saint-Nectaire cheese, offering a refined and indulgent contrast.

With an optimal aging potential of 5 to 6 years and a moderate alcohol content of 12.5%, this cuvée is a versatile choice for any occasion—whether it’s a special celebration or a casual indulgence.

One thing is clear after this tasting: “Sous la Robe” casts its spell effortlessly, leaving a lasting impression and an undeniable desire to explore more from Domaine de la Chopinière du Roy. For those looking to rediscover the splendor of Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil, this wine is an invitation that’s hard to resist.
