The Muscadet vineyard sits on a unique subsoil composed of metamorphic rocks such as gneiss, schist, and granite, offering the vines an ideal terrain to express a fresh and saline minerality. The mineral-rich soils contribute to vibrant and delicate wines, often characterized by iodine-like notes. Historically, vine cultivation in the Muscadet region dates back to the Middle Ages, with significant expansion in the 17th century, when the Dutch popularized these wines to supply their ships.

Muscadet

: wine characteristics for this appellation

Muscadet AOC wines are produced exclusively from the Melon de Bourgogne grape variety, also known as Melon Blanc. The dry white “still” wines offer citrus aromas (lemon, grapefruit) and white fruit notes (pear, green apple). These are fresh, lively, and mineral wines, with beautiful tension and a characteristic light salinity. Muscadets sur lie, aged on their fine lees for several months, develop additional aromatic complexity with brioche notes and a fuller mouthfeel. The communal crus, such as Clisson or Gorges, offer more structured wines with aging potential, featuring more intense aromas and pronounced minerality. Sparkling wines are not part of the Muscadet appellation. However, the region produces sparkling wines under other appellations. In the Pays Nantais, an aperitif often starts with a well-chilled Muscadet, perfect for stimulating the appetite. It’s convivial, refreshing, and affordable, even for the best vintages!
