The 2021 vintage of Coteaux du Layon can be described as “superb,” despite an unprecedentedly challenging year. Spring frost severely reduced yields, followed by outbreaks of mildew and heightened disease pressure. Yet, an unexpectedly generous late season allowed bold producers to harvest grapes reaching an extraordinary 19 to 21 potential alcohol levels. While the harvest was modest—barely half of a normal year—the quality is remarkable. The sweet and luscious wines produced stand out for their rare aromatic intensity, showcasing candied fruit notes and vibrant acidity that beautifully balances their richness. Compared to other Loire appellations, which also faced challenges, Coteaux du Layon emerges as one of the brightest successes for lovers of exceptional sweet and semi-sweet wines.
